2019 NT Interschool National Championship Team
Equestrian NSW did an excellent job hosting the 2019 Marcus Oldham Australian Interschool Equestrian Championships, which was held at SIEC from Saturday 28September to Wednesday 2 October.
This year 6 riders qualified to represent the Territory, with the following 4 riders accepting team positions: Cara Doherty (Team Captain), Amy Fisher, Indiana Evans and Sophie Carlton. Unfortunately, Bridie McKenna and Dominica Robertson were unable to attend. Congratulations to all who qualified.
Accompanied by family, friends and supporters, with the assistance and support of Team Manager; Karen Ruzsicska and Jumping Coach; Nicole Mutimer.
The National Interschool Championships hosts teams from all states plus New Zealand competing in; Dresage, Jumping, Eventing, Combined Training and Show Horse, and attracts more than 2,000 school based competitors aged 5-18 years old.
The NT Team was proud to have riders starting in 4 of the 5 disciplines offered, with Show Horse the only one missing a rider.
Let’s hear the experience of our team, management and coaching staff:
Cara Doherty (Fern Gully) - Team Captain
“I have represented the Territory at the Interschool Championships before, however this year I was proud to be the Captain. It was an honour to use my prior experience and knowledge to provide leadership and support to the rest of the team. This year was even more special to me as I was able to compete on my own horse, previous years I’ve used a pool horse”
Amy Fisher (Adloo Rosinante) - Team Member
“Being a part of the NT interschool team is a fantastic experience that I would recommend to anyone. I love being a part of a team that supports each other to succeed. This year I qualified to compete in Dressage and Jumping and was super excited to be the first Territory rider to represent in Eventing. Travelling down earlier allowed Rosi and I to compete at other interstate events leading up, giving us additional opportunities to compete and a great warm up to the main event”
Indiana Evans (Al Zahra) - Team Member
“This year was my first experience with interstate equestrian competition. The event was amazing, big beautiful grounds, it was horse heaven. I’ve returned home super motivated and regained an interest in Dressage which I’ll be competing more in next year. I’ll be training hard and hope to be a part of the 2020 team”
Sophie Carlton (Midnight Marvel) - Team Member
“This year was my first time qualifying on the team. We did initially think about getting a pool horse if I did qualify to save the travelling, but Deca and I worked so hard to qualify, that it wouldn’t have been the same without her. It was her first time interstate, we did really well and she was very chilled”
Karen Ruzsicska – Team Manager
“I’m very passionate about helping young riders achieve their riding goals and to grow as a rider. I was lucky enough to have similar opportunities when I was young. The event is growing each year and getting better and better”
Nicole Mutimer – Jumping Coach
“I’ve been the appointed Jumping Coach for the past two teams. The rider’s approach and commitment to training for this event is commendable. I’m fortunate to work with such talented young riders in the Territory and can’t stress enough that this event is for everyone. It’s an opportunity not to be missed, with a lot of support around you. What might sound impossible now, can be possible with the help and support available”
Aside from the honour of being selected onto the team to perform on one of Australia's most distinguished platforms for young riders, the girls were very excited to be part of the team.
The 2020 Australian Interschool Championships will be held in Toowoomba, Queensland from 28 September to 2 October (dates may be subject to slight change).
2020 NT squad nominations are now open!
